Updates in Orthopaedics Symposium
Wake Orthopaedics Physicians were appointed as the lead speakers of the Updates in Orthopaedics Symposium. This symposium is designed to address the evaluation and management of many commonly encountered orthopaedic conditions in the primary care and therapy offices. The goal is to provide a systematic review of current treatment recommendations. This course will address recent changes in orthopaedic paradigms and new technologies; improvements in standardization of care and coordination between health care providers and efficiently utilizing our health care resources.
Curtis Hanson, MD, Earns Subspecialty Board Certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine
Wake Orthopaedics is pleased to congratulate, Dr. Curtis Hanson, in receiving his Sports Medicine Subspecialty Board Certification. The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, in conjunction with the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, offers a certificate of subspecialty qualification for "those surgeons who have demonstrated qualifications beyond those expected of other orthopaedic surgeons by virtue of additional education, a practice characterized by a majority of cases in orthopaedic sports medicine, and contributions to this field of medicine." It is granted to orthopaedic surgeons who are invited to take and who pass a subspecialty examination in Sports Medicine. Fewer than 1000 surgeons in America hold this Sports Medicine Certification.

Fourth Office Location for Wake Ortho Now Open
Wake Orthopaedics is pleased to announce we will be expanding our orthopaedic services into the Brier Creek area. We have opened a new office in the WakeMed Brier Creek campus which is conveniently located to RTP, Durham, and Morrisville. Our new office will continue to provide exceptional patient care as well as digital x-ray and physical therapy. We look forward to meeting the orthopaedic needs of this community.

Dr. Timothy Harris was once again voted one of the "Best Orthopaedic Physicians in NC in 2011". Best Doctors Inc. polled physicians to find the best doctors in over 50 specialties in North Carolina. Congratulations Dr. Harris!
CASL Soccer Fest
Wake Orthopaedics participates with the Capital Area Soccer Leagues 2nd annual Soccer Fest which celebrates coaches as they kick off their new soccer season. We will assist with the event's activities which include coach's clinics and soccer games.
Addition to Wake Orthopaedics
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Okechukwu E. Nwoko, who brings to the practice exceptional skills in hand and microvascular surgery. Dr. Nwoko most recently completed his fellowship in these subspecialties at Duke University Medial Center following a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He received his medical degree from Philadelphia's Temple University School of Medicine where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and he holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. We are pleased to add Dr. Nwoko's talents to the Wake Orthopaedics team.

Elite Athletic Performance ACL Injury Prevention Program
Girls, ages 12-20 years old, are up to 8 times more likely to suffer an ACL injury than their male counterparts. Research has shown that specialized training in female athletes which focuses on these factors will significantly reduce the risk of ACL tears. The Physical Therapists at Wake Orthopaedics Elite Athletic Performance offer an ACL Injury Prevention Program for the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) U11 Classic girls.
Evening of Champions
Wake Orthopaedics joins with the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce and the Wake County Sports Alliance to sponsor the Annual Evening of Champions. This event honors the Triangle's top athletes, teams, & sports moments.
Orthopaedic Symposium
Wake Orthopaedics is pleased to announce that they will host an annual winter Orthopaedic Symposium. The Symposium will educate primary care providers and therapists on updates in orthopaedic diagnosis and care.
Wake Orthopaedics Medical Director
Dr. Mark Wood has been named Medical Director of Wake Orthopaedics. He was elected to a 3 year term by his fellow practice members. Dr. Wood will provide managerial oversight to the practice and help to develop and mold its strategic vision. He will also assume the title of Director of Orthopaedics at WakeMed. Congratulations to Dr. Wood!
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
Dr. Jonathan Chappell was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). The academy is the largest medical association for musculoskeletal specialists. Its fellows have completed medical school, plus at least five years of specialty study in orthopaedics in an accredited residency program, passed a comprehensive oral and written exam, and been certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. The AAOS has 35,664 members worldwide.
Arthritis Walk
Dr. Curtis Hanson has joined the Arthritis Foundation as the Raleigh Medical Chair for the 2011 Triangle Arthritis Walk. The Triangle Arthritis Walk is an annual event that celebrates making a positive impact on the lives of people living with arthritis by raising funds for arthritis research, education and life improvement programs in over 250 communities across the country. Dr. Hanson & Wake Orthopaedics are proud to be sponsors of such a worthwhile cause.

Seminar Series
Dr. Mark Wood was a featured speaker at the "Head to Toe" Lecture Series at WakeMed North. Dr. Wood, Dan Cyr, PT & Jeff Herbst, PT led a 2 hour lecture on Common Orthopaedic Injuries and the resulting treatment options, both non-operative & operative. This event was a free program for the North Raleigh community that focused on educating the public on how they can improve their health.
SAS Golf Tournament
The 10th annual SAS Golf Champions Tournament was held at Preston Country Club and Wake Orthopaedics was asked to be on site to assist with the event. Dr. Mark Wood and Jeff Herbst, PT were on hand to discuss orthopaedic injuries with players and attendees in the WakeMed Health Complex.
Spine Seminar
Dr. Gurvinder Deol was a guest speaker at the "Back to Life" spine seminar. The event was held at WakeMed Cary and was a free program for local residents that focused on cervical & lumbar issues. The physician discussed the causes & cures for these types of injuries.
Ladies Health Day
WakeMed hosted their annual Ladies Health Day and Dr. Casey Jenkins was a featured speaker. The event boasted free health screenings, vendor booths, & physician speakers all focused on educating the public on ways they can live a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Jenkins spoke about Carpal Tunnel Wrist Pain and how it specifically pertains to women.
Addition to Wake Orthopaedics
We are pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Corey Thompson to our practice. Dr. Thompson was born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a medical degree from the University of Minnesota. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency training at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He has also completed a fellowship in orthopaedic foot and ankle surgery in Houston, Texas with the Foundation for Orthopaedic, Athletic and Reconstructive Research. While in Houston, he served as a team physician for Rice University Athletics and assisted in providing foot and ankle care for the Houston Texans, Astros and Rockets.
Dr. Thompson's surgical interests include all aspects of operative and non-operative foot and ankle care including trauma and sports-related injuries, ligament and tendon injuries, post-traumatic arthritis, and deformity correction. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. He has published work in multiple peer-reviewed orthopaedic surgery journals. He also serves as a lecturer in instructing University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill orthopaedic surgery residents. In addition, he takes great pleasure in volunteering his time on charity surgery trips to Nicaragua.
Sport Fit Clinic
According to Safe Kids, more than 30 million children participate in sports each year in the United States and approximately 715,000 sports and recreation injuries occur in the high school setting alone. Sport Fit Clinic is an educational conference for coaches, trainers and parents addressing health and safety topics pertinent to middle and high school athletes. SportFit Clinic keeps players safer by providing education on overuse injuries, nutrition, and proper hydration. Dr. Wood was a featured speaker and he discussed Common Sports Injuries in the Young Athlete.
Dream Sports
Wake Ortho participated with the 7th annual Dream Sports Kids Day. Dream Sports is an athletic complex in Apex that offers hockey, soccer, basketball, & baseball training. Dr. Chappell was on site at the event to answer orthopaedic questions for parents and coaches. Jeff Herbst, PT was there to discuss rehab options.
Arthritis Walk
Wake Ortho and Dr. Hanson participated with the annual 5K Arthritis Walk. Dr. Hanson was the event medical chair and presented the JA honoree an award. Wake Ortho physicians and staff formed a team and participated in raising funds and awareness for this debilitating disease.
CASL Coaches Clinic
Dr. Chappell was the guest speaker at the annual Capital Area Soccer League Coaches Clinic. The Clinic is designed for the 250 team coaches and their families that will participate in the current CASL soccer season. Dr. Chappell discussed injury prevention and was on hand afterwards to meet with participants.
Tennis Injury Prevention Program
Dan Cyr, PT and Jeff Herbst, PT led a Tennis Injury Prevention Program in North Raleigh. The class was for active tennis players and reviewed common injuries specific to their sport. The participants were given take home exercises that focus on strengthening and conditioning so they can remain injury free and playing at the top of their game.
Best Doctors of 2009 in NC
Dr. Timothy Harris was recognized as one of the "best orthopaedic physicians of 2009 in NC." Boston-based Best Doctors Inc. polled physicians to find the best doctors in 46 specialties in North Carolina. Congratulations to Dr. Harris on this prestigious award.
Cervical Spine Research Society
Dr. Gurvinder Deol, Spine Surgeon with Wake Orthopaedics, was recently granted membership in the prestigious Cervical Spine Research Society. CSRS is a multidisciplinary organization, made up largely of Neurosurgeons and Orthopaedic Spine Surgeons, which provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and promotes clinical and basic science research of the cervical spine, and is the recognized authority on diseases of the cervical spine. National membership is capped at 200 clinicians; Dr. Deol is 1 of 10 members in NC and the only member in the Triangle.
North Raleigh Office Relocation
On Monday November 30th Wake Orthopaedics will relocate our North Raleigh office into a larger suite within the WakeMed North Healthplex. Our new office will be located at 10010 Falls of the Neuse Rd, Suite 015.
Addition to Wake Orthopaedics Staff
We are pleased to announce that Robert J. Caudle, MD has joined the Wake Orthoapedics team. Dr. Robert Caudle is a Raleigh native. He received his bachelor's degree from North Carolina State University and attended medical school at Wake Forest School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati and then continued his postgraduate training with a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at Texas Scottish Rite Crippled Children's Hospital. He then completed a rotating trauma fellowship in Europe before returning to private practice here in the Triangle.
Dr. Caudle has presented research nationally on trauma and pediatric orthopaedic problems. He has been a well-respected physician within the medical community for twenty years. His specialty interests of pediatric orthopaedics have also taken him on multiple foreign mission trips ranging from St. Lucia to Colombia and Nicaragua.
Dr. Caudle resides in the triangle where he where he continues to serve on two non-profit corporate boards. When not preparing for the next Nicaragua trip he enjoys all sports, reading, and occasional trips to the beach. Each fall you may find him on Friday nights officiating local high school football games.
Health Science Advisory Board
Wake Orthopaedics has been asked to be a part of the Apex Health Science Advisory Board. The purpose of the advisory board is to assist the Wake County Public School System with educating students that are interested in a future in healthcare. As a board member Wake Orthopaedics will coordinate health programs & develop partnerships with other healthcare facilities in the community that will benefit and educate local high school students.
CASL
Wake Orthopaedics is pleased to announce our partnership with the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL). We will host the "Wake Orthopaedics Discovery Soccer Program" and will sponsor their U11 and U12 divisions. We hope to support the over 9,000 families that participate in their programs.
Apex Senior Center
Wake Orthopaedics was asked to participate in the 2009 Senior Health Fair at the Apex Community Center. This event was held for active seniors and offered health screenings and information on how this population can remain healthy and active.
AO Lecture
Drs. Hanson, Harris, Norris, & Schimizzi have been asked to speak at the AO North America OR lectures. They will provide educational activities for personnel who specialize in the operative care of patients with orthopaedic and spine injuries. The course is a hands on lecture and discussion emphasizing a team approach to the care of trauma and reconstructive patients. Presenters are experienced surgeons who are distinguished in their field.
NCRB
Wake Orthopaedics was on site for the annual employee health day at the North Carolina Rate Bureau. The fair featured vendor booths educating employees on ways to improve their health and stay injury free in the work place.
WRAL
Dr. Wood will be a featured speaker on the WRAL News Health Report. The segment will highlight the increased incident of knee injury in female athletes & will offer insight into injury mechanics and non-operative & operative treatments.
SAS Golf Tournament
Dr. Schimizzi will be a part of the 9th Annual SAS Champions Golf Tournament in Prestonwood. This tournament features the top golfers in the world over the age of 50 and will air live on the Golf Channel. Dr. Schimizzi will be on site to interact with participants and provide orthopaedic information.
Curtis Hanson, MD earns fellowship in Total Joint Reconstruction
Wake Orthopaedics would like to welcome back Dr. Hanson! He has completed a fellowship program in total joint reconstruction from Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney Austrailia. He sees patients in both the Cary & Raleigh offices and is accepting new patients.
Apex Senior Center
Dr. Jenkins has been asked to serve as a guest speaker at the Apex Senior Center. He will hold an "Arthritis 101" class where he discusses causes, effects, and treatments of arthritis. There is no charge for this class. To sign up please contact the Apex Senior Center at 249-3402.
Sport Fit Clinic
Dr. Chappell will be a guest speaker at the Sport Fit Clinic. This half-day conference is for parents, coaches, and athletic trainers interested in learning health information, injury prevention and care for middle and high school aged athletes. The event will be held on Saturday August 8th from 8am-12:30pm at the Wake Med Raleigh campus. At the end of the program, participants will be able to understand what a concussion is (including recognition of warning signs, diagnosis and treatment), discuss second impact syndrome and the risk it presents for young athletes. recognize common orthopaedic sports injuries (including shoulder, elbow and knee pain), understand how to prevent common sports injuries, understand the importance of proper nutrition for young athletes, be familiar with sports drinks, energy drinks and supplements, recognize signs and symptoms of dehydration & heat stroke, and understand how to replenish fluids appropriately. Dr. Casey Jenkins will be a featured speaker on the WTVD 11 News Health Report. The segment will focus on Common Hand Injuries and offers injury prevention tips from the doctor. Hand Injuries account for nearly 10% of hospital Emergency Room visits. Tune in to Dr. Jenkins's segment and find out how you can easily reduce your risk of injury.
National Senior Health & Fitness Day
Dr. Wood is the guest speaker at the National Senior Health and Fitness Day. This annual event is sponsored by the YWCA of the Greater Triangle Area. Dr. Wood will educate the senior participants on "Understanding Arthritis" and will give them a better insight into what arthritis is, how it occurs, relay general and practical skills for living with arthritis, and stress the importance of exercise.
Johnston County Grand Rounds
Dr. Deol is the guest speaker for the Johnston County Medical Society. Dr. Deol discussed Examination and Treatment of Neck Pain over dinner to primary care physicians that work in the Johnston County area. He followed up the informative lecture with questions from the audience.
Extreme Beginnings
Wake Orthopaedics participated in the 2009 Extreme Beginnings Job Fair. This is a career exploration event for about 700 students from all high schools in Wake County. The event offers the students a chance to sit down in small groups and ask questions on how to pursue their career goals and educates them on classes they can be taking now to impact their future.
YMCA Lectures
Dr. Chappell led an informational talk to the Raleigh Triathlon Group. Wake Ortho partnered up with Wake Med Outpatient Rehab to provide this program at the A.E. Finley YMCA of North Raleigh. Dr. Chappell discussed Injury Prevention and Wake Med Outpatient Rehab was on site to mirror his talk with stations for stretches and core balance activities. This event was designed to keep these athletes moving forward injury free!
Educational Dinner Programs
Wake Orthopaedics will partner with ERMI to provide educational dinner programs for Workers Compensation Case Managers and Nurse Case Managers. These accredited talks will educate the participants on common work place injuries and will supply the participants with useful knowledge to use in their daily tasks.
Job Ready Services
Dr. Deol was asked to be the guest speaker at the Job Ready Services Quarterly Lecture. Job Ready Services offers work conditioning programs and hosted this talk for Workers Compensation Case Managers & Nurse Case Managers. Dr. Deol discussed Common Neck Injuries in the Workplace and Operative & Non-Operative Treatments.
Carolina Railhawks
Wake Orthopaedics is pleased to announce that Dr. Jonathan Chappell has been named the Orthopedic Doctor for the Carolina RailHawks. Dr. Chappell will attend all the matches and facilitate care for the team. The Carolina RailHawks is a USL-1 team whose season runs from March 21 to September 20. This includes 30 games: 15 home and 15 away. This also includes various exhibitions and preseason games. The Carolina RailHawks will play four games that will be televised nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel and all games are broadcasted on USLlive.com. The games are held at WakeMed Soccer Park which can seat up to 10,000 people.

Evening of Champions
Wake Orthopaedics will sponsor and attend the 2009 Evening of Champions. This event celebrates the Triangle's professional and amateur teams, athletes, and fans. The event features a silent auction, award presentations, video countdown of top sports moments, and a keynote speaker. The event is aired live on sports radio 850 The Buzz.
Arthritis Support Group Speaker
Wake Orthopaedics physicians have been asked to be guest speakers at local arthritis support groups in the Triangle. These support groups are for adults with any type of arthritis. The meetings provide support and education to the participants. Arthritis is one of the nation's leading causes of disability and we are proud to help educate people on how to take control of their condition.
National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses
The NAON has asked two of our doctors to be keynote speakers at the seventeenth Annual Orthopaedic Nurses Workshop. Dr. Aimee Schimizzi will be discussing Hand Trauma and Dr. Curtis Hanson will lead a presentation on Gunshot wounds and Trauma. The workshop will be held at the William and Ida Friday Center in Chapel Hill.
Speaking of Women's Health
Wake Orthopaedics is pleased to have been asked to participate with Speaking of Women's Health at the Raleigh Convention Center. This is a nationwide annual event that educates women through educational conferences, television programming, newsletters, books and community outreach. Their objective is to provide up-to-date information from credible experts in a fun and entertaining way so that women can better care for themselves and their loved ones. This year Dr. Aimee Schimizzi will be featured as a keynote speaker. Dr. Schimizzi will be leading a talk on Healthy Bones and Osteoporosis.
Town of Apex Senior Health Fair
Wake Orthopaedics will join Wake Med in participating with the first annual Town of Apex Senior Health Fair. We will be on site to promote healthy senior living through educating the participants on health topics specific to their age group. We will discuss osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, total joint replacements, and injury prevention.
Capital Broadcasting Company
Wake Orthopaedics and Wake Med will participate in seven health fairs to benefit over a thousand employees and spouses of the Capital Broadcasting Company. The health fair will offer health screenings and informational vendor booths at multiple CBC locations. Dr. Mark Wood, Dr. Aimee Schimizzi, Bethany McCabe, OT and Dan Cyr, PT will be on site to answer orthopaedic questions and provide patrons with injury prevention techniques.
Triangle Wide Publications
Dr. Jonathan Chappell was featured in Health and Wellness articles in both the Wake Living Magazine and the 15 501 Magazine. These articles feature his knowledge on repetitive use diagnoses, generating new treatments, elbow injuries, and preventing sports injuries.
Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Business Expo
Wake Orthopaedics, the Carolina Hurricanes, and Triangle Business Journal teamed up with 850 AM the Buzz and other sponsors to provide a networking event at the RBC Center. Dr. Curtis Hanson and Jeff Herbst PT were on site to answer orthopaedic, operative, and post operative questions.
Dr. Wood leads Johnston County Medical Society Talk
Dr. Mark Wood led an informative talk on "New treatments for Shoulder Dislocations" for the Johnston County Medical Society. This group is comprised of family practitioners and general internists who meet on a monthly basis for an educational lecture series. Dr. Wood was asked to be the Orthopaedic guest speaker and educate the participants on up and coming treatments for Shoulder Dislocations.
Dr. Deol leads Retirement Community Talk
Dr. Gurvinder Deol discussed Neck & Back pain with residents from a Retirement Community in Raleigh. These residents were treated to an educational talk on the causes of neck & back pain and what are surgical and non-surgical methods of treatment. Dr. Deol also hosted a question and answer session for participants to inquire about spinal issues that affect older populations.
Injury Prevention Program
Dan Cyr, a Physical Therapist at Wake Orthopaedics, has implemented an Injury Prevention Program for the Cardinal Gibbons High School Men's Varsity Soccer Team. This program focuses on proper warm up techniques, strength training, plyometrics, agility, and stretching. As well as instructing these athletes on healthy guidelines for ideal diet, nutrition, and hydration. This program was designed to assist participants in preventing injuries and further educate the soccer community on ways to promote and maintain proper health.
Addition to Wake Orthopaedics Staff
We are pleased to announce the addition of four fellowship trained surgeons to our practice. Each has completed additional training in their area of expertise to provide cutting edge care.
Dr. Gurvinder Deol was born and raised in England, and after completing high school moved to the US. He received his bachelor's degree from North Carolina State University and attended medical school at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He completed his Orthopaedic surgery residency at Penn State University College of Medicine, and then continued his postgraduate training with a fellowship in Spine surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Dr. Casey Jenkins was raised in Michigan. He is a fellowship trained hand and upper extremity surgeon with interests in fracture, joint instability, and soft tissue repair. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and attended medical school at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland prior to fellowship in hand and microsurgery at Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. Russell Norris was raised in New Bern, North Carolina. He received his bachelor's degree from North Carolina State University and attended medical school at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Greenville Hospital System and then continued his postgraduate training with a fellowship in orthopaedic trauma at the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine in Chattanooga, TN.
Dr. Aimee Schimizzi was raised in Wilmington, North Carolina. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and attended medical school at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, School of Medicine. She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of California San Diego and then continued her postgraduate training with a fellowship in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery at the C.V. Starr Hand Surgery Center/ St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.
Retirement Community Health Talks
Dr. Jonathan Chappell led two informative Health Talks at Retirement Communities in North Raleigh. He spoke about Arthritis and educated the participants on what the condition is, the causes of arthritis, & what people can do now for prevention. He led a very interactive discussion and took the time to answer each & every one of the participant's questions. The residents benefited from the orthopaedic knowledge they gained and Wake Orthpaedics was granted the opportunity to give back to the community.
Town of Wendell Health Fair
Wake Orthopaedics participated in the second annual Town of Wendell Employee Health Fair. Our Physical Therapists & Occupational Therapist were on site to answer orthopaedic questions and interact with the participants. The employees also received literature on ergonomics and tips on how to prevent injuries. Wake Orthopaedic is proud to be part of this educational event.

Physical Therapy at Wake Orthopaedics
We are pleased to announce the addition of Dan Cyr and Jeff Herbst to the Wake Orthopaedics practice. Both Dan and Jeff will offer Physical Therapy services starting in May.
Dan Cyr was born in Canada and raised in northern Maine. He received his Physical Therapy degree from the University of New England. He then relocated to North Carolina and has been practicing in Wake County ever since. Dan has furthered his career by attending numerous post graduate training seminars in sports medicine and orthopedics. He has also created a researched based soccer injury prevention program and is involved in training golfers through a golf specific conditioning program. Dan is married and has one child. In his spare time he enjoys playing golf, soccer, hockey and spending time with family and friends.

Jeff Herbst was born and raised in Palmyra, NY. He relocated to the Raleigh area after attending Ithaca College where he received his Bachelor of Clinical Science and Master of Science in Physical Therapy. Jeff started his career at Durham Regional Hospital, but has been employed at WakeMed Health and Hospitals for the past 10 years with a focus on outpatient rehab for the past 8 years. He enjoys sports and has been involved in running golf and soccer conditioning programs. In his spare time, Jeff enjoys spending time with his wife and 2 kids, golfing, Hurricanes hockey, Nascar, and working in the yard.

Extreme Beginnings
Wake Orthopaedics participated in the eighth annual "Extreme Beginnings" career exploration event. This event is sponsored through the Wake County Public High School system and was open to more than 600 students, in grades 10th-12th. The students were educated on courses and activities they can start doing now that will benefit them for a career in the health field. Wake Orthopaedics was proud to be asked to participate with the event once again.
Town of Apex Health Fair
Wake Orthopaedics is participating once again in the Town of Apex Employee's Health Fair. This health fair is open to all employees of the Town of Apex and will offer health screenings and informational vendor booths. Dr. Jonathan Chappell will be on site to answer orthopaedic questions and provide patrons with injury prevention techniques.
Dr. Wood Inducted as a Fellow of the AAOS
Mark L. Wood, MD was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons on March 5, 2008, during ceremonies at the Academy's 75th Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Dr. Wood was one of 675 new members inducted nationally. The Academy has 31,282 members worldwide. The Academy is the largest medical association for musculoskeletal specialists. Its Fellows have completed medical school, plus at least five years of specialty study in orthopaedics in an accredited residency program, passed a comprehensive oral and written exam, and been certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. With more than 31,000 members, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is a not-for-profit organization that provides education programs for orthopaedic surgeons, allied health professionals and the public.
Dr. Chappell to Present Publications
Dr. Jonathan Chappell will be presenting at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Shoulder and Elbow Specialty Day on March 8, 2008 in San Francisco, CA and at the annual meeting for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in Orlando, FL on July 10, 2008. The presentation is entitled "Clinical Outcomes of Arthroscopic Treatment of OCD Lesions of the Capitellum." The paper associated with the presentation will also be published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and is nominated for the prestigious Charles Neer Award for Clinical Research.
Cary Office Relocation
This February, Wake Orthopedics' Cary office, will relocate to a larger suite within the Cary Medical Park on Ashville Avenue. Our new address will be 212 Ashville Ave, Suite 30. Our contact numbers and office hours will remain the same. We look forward to assisting you in the new office.
2008 Runners Clinic
Join us for the 2008 Runners Clinic designed specifically to focus on the needs of dedicated runners in our area. Dr. Jonathan Chappell and Apex Physical Therapy will present an educational experience that will help in injury prevention and as well as provide an insight into improving running potential. The event is Saturday January 19th at the Glenaire Exercise Center. The event starts at 10am and will offers a unique opportunity for runners in the area to learn about biomechanics, addressing core alignment and postural imbalances in order to create the foundation for optimal function. He received his bachelor's degree from Davidson College and attended medical school at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and then continued his postgraduate training with a fellowship in sports medicine at Kerlan-Jobe Sports Institute in Los Angeles, California.

Capital Broadcasting Company
Wake Orthopaedics and Wake Med will participate in seven health fairs in the month of October to benefit the employees and spouses of the Capital Broadcasting Company. The health fair is expected to draw over 1,200 people and will offer health screenings and informational vendor booths at multiple CBC locations. Dr. Mark Wood & Dr. Curt Hanson will be on site to answer orthopaedic questions and provide patrons with injury prevention techniques.
Anna's Angels 10k Walk/Run
Wake Orthopaedics will once again join forces with Anna's Angels to support funds for Down Syndrome Research. The race is on Sunday October 7th at 8am and hopes to have 750 participants this year. We will be the "Start to Finish" sponsor, provide water to runners, and run the First Aid tent. We are excited to be a part of such a meaningful cause.
Career Development at Apex High School
Wake Orthopaedics participated in Career Development Day at Apex High School on October 26, 2007. One of our talented Radiologic Technologist addressed the Career Builder class that is comprised of junior and senior high school students. The focus of the presentation is to discuss what these jobs entail and promote students to take action now towards preparing themselves for a career in the medical field. The presentation evoked much discussion and interaction was encouraged.
Wellness Wednesdays
Wake Orthopaedics is joining with Wake Med and our local YMCA's to promote Wellness Wednesdays starting on October 31st. This program will run from 8am-12pm and will offer a variety of health screenings and informational booths for all YMCA members. Members will be eligible for cholesterol screenings, bone density screenings, blood pressure screenings, diabetes screenings, asthma screenings, and flu shots. There will also be informational booths that offer one on one interaction with experts in orthopaedics, pharmacy, cardiology, nutrition, dentistry, physical therapy, and much more. We are proud to participate and build a stronger bond to our community.
Women's Health Conference
Wake Orthopaedics will be assisting with the annual Speaking of Women's Health Conference on September 14th and 15th. Speaking of Women's Health is a non-profit foundation, whose goal is saving lives through education. the National Speaking of Women's Health Foundation educates women in a variety of ways, including educational conferences, television programming, newsletters, books and community outreach. This event provides up-to-date information so that women can better care for themselves and for their families. Speaking of Women's Health Raleigh and Wake Orthopaedics wants to provide every woman with the resources to improve her health, well-being and personal safety.
North Carolina Special Olympics
Wake Orthopaedics proudly joined with the North Carolina Special Olympics to ensure that the summer 2007 games were a huge success. Over 1,300 athletes competed in six sports including athletics, aquatics, gymnastics, power lifting, softball, and volleyball. Dr. Curtis Hanson, Dr. Mark Wood, and our Cary Physician Assistant, Brigette Flower provided on field medical care at the softball venue for the June 2nd and June 3rd games. Raleigh Rescue Mission
For the first two weekends of June Wake Orthopaedics has pledged to provide a hot and nutritious meal to the residents of the Raleigh Rescue Mission. Our staff and doctors will be on site to help with meal preparation, serving, and cleaning up after the meals. We feel like this is an invaluable service and we were eager to assist them.
The Mission offers both a long-term recovery program and emergency shelter for men, women and children. The Mission provides safe housing, clothing and three healthy meals a day, as well as recovery, Christian counseling and other support services to help them achieve their goals and ultimately make a successful transition back into the community. Raleigh Rescue Mission provides free medical care services to residents through their on-site Medical and Pediatric Clinic. Residents also receive job and computer skills training, as well as life skills and educational classes.

We are pleased to announce the addition of Brigette Flower, P.A. to the Cary office. Brigette Flower was born and raised in Mentor, OH. She relocated to Pittsburgh, PA to attend Duquesne University where she received her Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Physician Assistant. She completed her master's research on "Treatment Modalities for Osteoarthritis of the Proximal and Distal Interphalangeal Joints of the Hands."
Mrs. Flower has been practicing orthopaedics since 2004. She currently resides in Clayton, NC with her husband and daughter.

National Women's Health Week
Wake Orthopaedics will be celebrating the National Women's Health Week by participating in the first annual Women's Health & Wellness Fair in Fuquay Varina. This informative health fair will be on May 14th from 12pm-7pm in the Bentwinds Country Club Clubhouse. Brigette Flower one of our Physicians Assistants along with Audrey Chen & Bethany McCabe our occupational therapists will be on site to discuss preventive steps for women to avoid injuries and well as encourage women to take more steps to leading a healthy and happy life.

Panther Creek High School Football Team
Wake Orthopaedics gladly announces their sole sponsorship of the Panther Creek High School football team. This is the first varsity football team that the school has ever had and we are excited to be a part of the inaugural year. We will be supporting their athletic team by providing a reusable popcorn cup for spectators to enjoy. Please come out and support Panther Creek football. Their first home game will be held on Friday August 31st against Broughton High School.

Apex High School Internship Program
Wake Orthopaedics will join with Apex High School to provide an internship program for a local high school sophomore. This student will complete 30 hours of job shadowing in a 10 week program. Our doctors, physician's assistant, nurses, and staff are excited to work with him and help broaden his insight into the medical field.
