Dr. Gurvinder Deol performed the first Orthofix M6 artificial disc replacement in Raleigh, NC. The recently FDA approved design is the only artificial disc that incorporates an artificial nucleus (made from polycarbonate urethane) and a woven fiber annulus (made from polyethylene). The M6 artificial nucleus and annulus are designed to provide the same motion characteristics of a natural cervical disc.

What is cervical disc degeneration/herniation?  Cervical disc degeneration/herniation is a common condition that occurs when one or more of the discs between the vertebrae of the cervical spine has deteriorated or been damaged. This often results in pain in the neck, shoulders and arms.

What are some of the benefits of cervical disc replacement?  With cervical disc replacement, there is a significant reduction in pain, maintenance or improvement of neurological function, and the preservation of natural disc motion after 24 months when compared to fusion. Cervical disc replacement allows preservation of motion and also protects the other levels from degeneration.
