John W. Neal is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic trauma surgeon who was born in Durham and raised in Southern Pines, NC. He earned his Bachelor of Sciences degree from Duke University followed by a graduate degree in physiology at North Carolina State University.  He then completed the triangle by earning his medical degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 2011. He completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Dr. Neal joined Wake Orthopaedics in 2019.  Prior to this, he worked as an attending surgeon and clinical faculty of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School where he was involved in the training of medical students and orthopaedic residents.  He also completed his fellowship training in Orthopaedic Trauma at the Rutgers/NJMS University Hospital in Newark, NJ.

Dr. Neal is interested in management of orthopaedic injuries and fractures, including fractures of the pelvic ring and acetabulum and complex periarticular fractures.  Additionally, he has an interest in adult reconstruction and performs hip and knee replacements.

Dr. Neal resides in Raleigh with his wife and their young son and twin girls.  When not in the hospital, he enjoys running and playing golf.
