Our staff at Wake Orthopaedics is passionate about improving our patient’s lives and offering compassionate care –– which is why we offer a range of knee treatment options at our orthopedic offices across the Research Triangle Park.
Knee replacement surgery can be a big decision. Our skilled physicians offer a variety of surgical treatment options and will work closely with you to determine if a partial or total knee replacement is the right option for you.
If knee replacement surgery is advised, patients can expect quality treatment and care from start to finish. Our knee replacement specialists (Drs. Harris, Hanson, Ruffolo and Summers) are highly skilled in a range of minimally invasive techniques that offer a smooth transition back to daily life and quicker recovery time.
During total knee replacement, our surgeons resurface the damaged knee, and insert plastic and metal implants over the ends of the knee and the knee cap.
In cases of limited knee arthritis, our surgeons offer minimally-invasive partial knee replacement. This procedure allows our surgeons to replace just one side of the knee, removing up to 75 percent less bone and cartilage. In some patients (who have pain in the front of their knee), only the knee cap and underlying femur need to be replaced. Partial knee replacement is less painful, offers quicker recovery time, and maintains a more natural knee motion than a total replacement.
Partial knee replacements and some complete knee replacements can be performed as outpatient surgery, allowing the patient to go home less than 24 hours after surgery.
Typically, patients will be up and moving the day of surgery, often with the help of parallel bars or crutches. A physical therapist will suggest a regimen of at-home exercises that will further strengthen the knee, as well as set up a therapy schedule to ensure the best possible post-surgery outcomes.
At Wake Orthopaedics, our primary goal is to provide our patients with the best possible experience—which is why we are here to answer all of your questions and help get you back on your feet.
